Not for me, but there are new wheels in the RPM household. It’s not the most exciting vehicle in the world, but boy is it comfortable and safe, and I like the looks of it too. And goddam n, those Volvo seats are comfy. Those who will be driving it are suitably excited. And I am excited because CPO: it is a 2017 with under 10,000 miles on it, and has a CPO warranty for a total of 7 years and 100,000 miles. It is exactly as pictured below: a 2017 XC60 T5 Dynamic, AWD, with all the safety bells and whistles. It’s not what I would buy for myself but for the former Mrs. RPM and RPM Jr. to use, especially since we’ll all be driving over mountain passes a lot more in the next few years, I’m pretty happy about it. You can hate crossovers all you like but they’re certainly practical, and while ordinarily I’d prefer a wagon, the rear area of the V60 isn’t tall enough to put our two large dogs in comfortably.

Pretty good dealer experience too, I have to say.

I think all Volvo’s get a pass for enthusiasts.  Maybe they’re not the sporty alternative, but they are safe, practical, stylish (either quirky stylish for older models, and truly stylish for the new), and everyone seems to have an interesting story about a Volvo from some point in their life.  I think the XC60 is a great looking vehicle, and wouldn’t mind my wife picking one up for herself.

I think all Volvo’s get a pass for enthusiasts.

I think this is also true for Subaru for fairly similar reasons although I’m not sure they’ve every been funky or stylish,

Well put. I tend to agree. M y dad had a Volvo sedan when I was in high school that I got to drive from time to time. It wasn’t particularly fast or “sporty” but I absolutely  loved that car. Every Volvo I’ve ever been in has been great. Having driven nearly every crossover and small SUV on the market in the past couple of months, plus a few small wagons and hatchbacks, I really think the XC60 is the best. Close s econd was the Mazda CX-5, for what it’s worth.

RPM Jr.’s current car is an older Forester, and it sure smells funky.

It looks like they glued a mobile phone to the center console. Is that the HVAC controls?

Yeah, it’s not a screen, all physical buttons. Looks a little better in person, thankfully. The stylized silhouette of a human is the HVAC, and the rows of buttons above it are (unfortunately) a 1-9 phone pad—just like Mercedes does (or at least did until very recently). The buttons around the perimeter are for infotainment (top) and climate/c omfort/ driver assist/safety stuff (bottom) .   They redesigned it for 2018 and went more Tesla touch-screen style—it looks nice but I’m not sure it’s an improvement functionally.

I mean ... yeah these are funky but they are hardly representative of Subaru as whole.

Those wheels are the most odd and beautiful design I have ever laid eyes on.

I had two, a 1.8L non turbo, and an XT-6. The 1.8 was a much better car as it was not a salvage title, but the XT-6 was pretty quick considering it was only 160 HP 2.7L 6. The CD on these cars is very very low.

There will be a time very soon when everyone is envious of buttons. The trend is away from any buttons to the touch screen and one or few master buttons. It looks odd now but not forever. Nice car, looks comfy and being a Volvo it will be safe.

I don’t like it.

The plastic on the floor looks too wrinkly.

Not to dive in to your personal life, but did you just buy your ex-wife a vehicle, and foresee going on family roadtrips with her and the little one?

Not being snarky at al l - hell, it’s a great benchmark for all parents to strive for after separation. There’d be a hell of a lot fewer stressed out kids out there losing sleep over bickering parents fighting over them.

The little one ain’t that little—he’s going to college in the fall on the other side of the aforementioned mountain passes. She’ll be working out of the country more often than not, so he’ll actually use it the most. And I didn’t buy all of it, just helped.

But otherwise, yeah , we’re all adults here and we get along fine—even if we’re not together anymore we’re really all on the same team , you know? We’ve tried to make it easier on the kid even when that isn’t easy for us.
